HAZARDS AND JOY FROM THE TRADE

Without any warning signs, the rain fell in torrents. My thoughts went up in prayers. “Dear God, please bring the plane from Cebu safely to Del Carmen.” This is one of the hazards of the trade. Our hearts keep uppity- uppity- hop because one is never certain about travelling as scheduled. The airport here is so small and without sophisticated navigation equipment. Mayor Coro used to say that the airport manager is used to going out of the airport, put his hand over his forehead to see if the plane is landing.

I hardly saw any car or jeepney in Del Carmen. It is such a sleepy town. There are perhaps 6 vendors in the town market selling fish and one grocery masquerading as a hypermarket. Even the teachers, principals and supervisors are lethargic with little energy.  Yesterday morning, the ice breaker failed to elicit excitement from them. They didn’t want to leave the space where they stood and had no energy to go around the room. We had to adjust the schedule of activities and went right away to puzzle making.  By around 11:00 A.M, we had a turnaround. They were already sharing their thoughts and laughing. They said that it was traditional for teachers not to be asked to speak their minds out. And this the same practice that they are passing on to their students.

The principals are so used to “what is”.  For example, parents would like everything to be free. But we told them not to give up. Values and practices can change. We just need to start and be persistent.

Doc Estoy observed that it only takes one mayor to wake up a sleeping community and breathe life into it. This is just what Mayor Coro has done. Dropout rate is zero and NAT scores of children have climbed to 83 percent. Donors are plenty. Yesterday, San Miguel Corporation donated 350 thousand for livelihood projects.

When we went to see the teachers’ workshopping with Genesis Camarista and Edwin, they were all raising their hands. Mayor Coro said that they have become children once more. “If only they can make their students behave like excited children.”

The Mayor has discovered the secret of what will keep communities, including Synergeia going:” Feeling, thinking and loving like children.”

Making a Difference in Teachers’ Lives

Thirty-five second grade teachers of Tagoloan gave up two vacation days to attend the training to enhance their competencies in teaching reading.

Mrs. Flerida Nery and Ms. Edralin Manla, Synergeia’s dedicated trainers from Xavier University, demonstrated how reading can be taught effectively. The teachers actively participated in the exercises on blending of sounds and word-drills. Every workshop has provided them with an opportunity to showcase their creativity in applying what they learned.

The significant impact of the training translated into teachers’ commitments to make a difference in the lives of their pupils. Among other things, they vowed to dedicate extra time to non-readers; make reading sessions extra fun and engaging; and use positive affirmations.

Key PMT members — SB Member and Chair Audie Paduganan, PSDS Beatriz Bentuzal and school administrators — with STEAG representatives led by Ms. Elnie Cagas, graced the occasion. With STEAG’s support, the activity was conducted on April 25-26 at the newly opened hotel in the municipality.

Through Sickness and In Health

Two whole day trainings were conducted last Mar. 2 and Mar. 12, 2013 for the kindergarten and grades 1 and 2 teachers of Bagong Tanyag Elementary School – Main, Annex A and Annex B.]

training-day-1

The topic discussed during the first training was Remedial Reading Instruction in English while the second day was allotted for Filipino/Mother Tongue Instruction. Over 50 preschool and grade school teachers were trained by the very capable and dedicated Prof. Shirley T. Equipado. Even though on both occasions she was sick with the flu and had a sprain on one of her ankles, she still had enough zest to bring inspiration to the teachers by sharing her insights and personal experiences as a teacher. She shared proven and tested teaching techniques, development of instructional materials and lesson plans, as well as personal anecdotes and beliefs about the value of education and the importance of having great teachers. The training sessions also became a venue for teachers to obtain both personal and professional development while being reenergized for the road ahead by taking a break from their usual work day.

training-day-2

The trainings were very well received by the teachers, who expressed their deep gratitude for Prof. Shirley’s inputs and presence, especially with all her ailments. Part two of the teachers’ trainings in English and Filipino is still in the works but if the start shows any hint of how the other trainings will be like, then it will surely be a hit as well.
